Product Overview

NVS36 (overseas model RLN36) is the flagship model in this series: it supports 36-channel IPC access, up to 16MP per channel, 3 SATA interfaces (up to 16TB per drive, 48TB total), 8 alarm inputs and 4 alarm outputs, all housed in a 1U rackmount chassis.

Official specifications: Supports up to 36 IP cameras, up to 16MP per channel; 4 RJ-45 GbE ports (for connecting IP cameras) + 1 RJ-45 GbE port (LAN/WAN); 3 SATA interfaces (hard drives optional, not included); up to 48TB; HDMI 4K / VGA; simultaneous playback of 1-4 channels; H.265 / H.264.

**Important: This unit does not have built-in PoE power.** The 4 GbE ports are data ports and do not supply power, so the cameras require a separate PoE switch or their own power supplies. This is completely different from the NVS4 / NVS8 / NVS16, so please confirm before purchasing.

36 Channels and 16MP per Channel: Designed for Large-Scale Systems

With 36 channels, this model offers the highest capacity in the series, making it suitable for schools, industrial buildings, large warehouses, housing estates and other scenarios where one or two cameras are not enough and dozens are required. Each channel supports up to 16MP input, allowing even the latest-generation 4K / 12MP cameras to be recorded in full.

Please note that 36 channels is the maximum number of channels supported for camera access. Whether all 36 channels can record continuously 24/7 depends on the total hard drive capacity and overall bitrate. Based on 36 4K channels, 48TB can store approximately one to two weeks of footage; with 2K cameras only, the same capacity can store more than one month of footage.

  • Supports up to 36 IPCs
  • Up to 16MP per Channel
  • H.265 / H.264 Dual Encoding

No PoE Power: This Must Be Addressed First

This is the point about the NVS36 that is most easily misunderstood: it only has 4 GbE data ports and does not provide PoE power. Cameras must either have their own power supplies or be connected to a separate PoE switch (such as a 16-port or 24-port PoE switch).

Practical setup: Connect the 36 cameras to several PoE switches, then uplink the switches to the GbE ports on the NVS36. This allows cabling to be divided by section, with one switch per floor, making it far more practical than running 36 long cables from a single NVR.

  • 4 GbE Ports, No Power Supply
  • A Separate PoE Switch Is Required
  • Suitable for Layered / Zoned Cabling

Planning for 3 SATA Bays and 48TB

There are 3 SATA interfaces, each supporting up to 16TB, for a total of 48TB. Hard drives are optional (not included by the manufacturer), so remember to include them in the total cost — 48TB of surveillance-grade hard drives is a considerable expense.

Recommended approach: Start with 2 × 16TB drives for segmented storage and leave the 3rd bay available for future expansion. If you only need 10-20 channels, the NVS16 offers better value (it includes a built-in 4TB drive and provides PoE power).

  • 3 SATA Bays, Up to 16TB per Drive
  • Up to 48TB Total
  • Hard Drives Optional, Not Included by the Manufacturer

Alarm Inputs/Outputs and System Integration

Supports 8 alarm inputs and 4 alarm outputs, allowing connection to external devices such as door contacts, infrared beam detectors and alarm sirens. This is a capability not found on home-use NVRs and forms part of a professional system integration setup.

It also features two-way audio (RCA audio input / output), front and rear USB ports (front: 1×USB2.0; rear: 1×USB2.0 + 1×USB3.0), and protocols including RTMP / RTSP / DDNS. These interfaces are highly practical for sites that need to connect to existing audio or broadcasting systems.

  • 8 Alarm Inputs, 4 Outputs
  • Two-Way Audio (RCA)
  • One USB 3.0 port for external backup

1U rack-mount design, cooling and long-term operation

330×48×310mm, 2.26kg (without hard drives), 1U rack-mount design, fits standard 19-inch racks. Power supply: DC 12V/5.4A. Power consumption without hard drives: <10W.

The heat generated by 3 hard drives running simultaneously is considerable, so the rack must have adequate airflow (fans or air conditioning). If installed inside an enclosed wooden cabinet, hard drive temperatures remaining above 50°C for extended periods will significantly shorten their lifespan. In actual maintenance, this is more important than any specification.

  • 1U rack-mount design, 330×48×310mm
  • 3 hard drives require good cooling
  • DC 12V/5.4A

Suitable and unsuitable scenarios

Suitable: Large systems with 20 or more cameras — schools, industrial buildings, residential estates, large warehouses and chain headquarters. Suitable for locations requiring centralized management, zoned cabling and integration with external alarm equipment.

Not suitable: Small users who want “plug and play without purchasing additional equipment” (choose NVS16 instead), users who only need up to 8 cameras (NVS8 offers better value), or environments without rack space.

  • Suitable for large systems with 20 or more cameras
  • PoE switch and hard drives required separately
  • Recommended for rack installation

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the NVS36 supply PoE directly to cameras?
No. It only has 4 GbE data ports and does not provide power. Cameras must have their own power supply, or you will need a separate PoE switch. This is the biggest difference between it and the NVS4/8/16.
Is the NVS36 the same unit as the RLN36?
They use the same hardware (the official Hardware field is N5MB01 for both, with identical specifications); only the model naming differs between markets.
Does it come with hard drives?
No. The 3 SATA bays are optional, and hard drives are not included by the manufacturer. Each drive supports up to 16TB, for a total of 48TB.
How should 36 channels be wired?
We recommend dividing the system by zones: install one PoE switch on each floor or in each area, and connect the switch uplink to the GbE ports on the NVS36. This eliminates the need to run 36 long cables from the NVR.
How do I choose between the NVS36 and NVS16?
It depends on the number of channels. Choose the NVS16 for 10–24 cameras (it has 16 PoE ports and built-in 4TB storage, making installation easier); choose the NVS36 for 25 or more cameras (but you will need a separate PoE switch and hard drives).
How long can 48TB record for?
With 36 channels in 4K, approximately one to two weeks; with 36 channels in 2K, more than one month. Actual recording time depends on the bit rate, scene complexity, and recording mode.
Does it support alarm devices and door contacts?
It supports 8 alarm inputs and 4 alarm outputs, allowing connection to door contacts, infrared beams, sirens, and more.
Can it be installed in a rack cabinet?
Yes, it is a 1U rack-mount unit. However, 3 hard drives generate significant heat, so the rack cabinet must have adequate airflow and cooling.
Does it support third-party cameras?
It supports protocols such as RTSP/RTMP and can connect to third-party cameras, but AI detection and event tagging functions are not guaranteed to work.
Is it difficult to install?
It is more complex than a home NVR installation: you need to plan the PoE switches, hard drives, rack cooling, and zone-based cabling. We recommend having a technician handle the installation, and we can provide system planning advice.

Do systems with more than 20 cameras require planning?

Send us the floor plan, number of floors, and number of cameras. We can help plan the PoE switch zones, hard drive capacity, and rack configuration, and provide a complete equipment list and quotation.
