Product Overview

The Reolink NVS8-NHD is an 8-channel PoE network video recorder that supports connecting Reolink cameras with resolutions of up to 12MP. Each camera requires only one network cable for both power and video transmission, so there is no need to run a separate power cable to the camera location.

The specifications on this page are based on the official product summary provided by the distributor. For items not listed by the distributor (such as details of HDMI/VGA output resolutions), we will not add information ourselves and will mark them as “Official information pending”. You may contact us to request the manufacturer’s specification sheet.

This series is available in two versions: “unit only” and “built-in 2TB”. The hardware is identical, with the only difference being whether a hard drive is pre-installed. The product numbers and EANs are different, so please check carefully when placing your order.

8-Channel PoE: Power and Video via One Network Cable

The NVS8-NHD has 8 built-in PoE network ports. Each camera requires only one network cable for both power and video transmission. This means you do not need to run additional power cables through the ceiling or along exterior walls, nor prepare a power adapter for each camera.

For common Hong Kong properties such as village houses, street-level shops and warehouses, this design directly cuts the cabling work in half: 8 cameras = 8 network cables returning to the NVR, without requiring 8 power sockets.

When connecting the cables, we recommend labelling each camera location according to the order of the ports on the unit (for example, CH1 Front Door, CH2 Parking Space). This way, you will not have to guess which camera is which when viewing the footage in the App later.

Storage and Expansion: Built-in 2TB, with Room for More

The unit comes with a built-in 2TB surveillance-grade hard drive, so you can start recording as soon as it is powered on without purchasing a hard drive separately. It also retains 1 SATA and 1 eSATA interface, allowing you to expand the storage capacity yourself later if needed.

The maximum capacity is 12TB, with a maximum of 6TB per hard drive. Based on continuous recording from 8 4MP cameras, 2TB can retain approximately one to two weeks of footage. The actual number of days depends on the resolution, bitrate and recording mode.

Changing the recording mode to motion-triggered recording can extend the retention period by several times on the same hard drive. This is also the setting most commonly used in actual home installations.

12MP Resolution Support: Upgrade the Cameras without Replacing the Recorder

The NVS8-NHD supports connecting Reolink cameras with resolutions of up to 12 megapixels (12MP). This is important for future upgrades: you can start with 4MP or 8MP cameras and later switch to models with a higher resolution while continuing to use the same recorder, without replacing the entire system.

Please note that “supported resolution” and “simultaneous playback capability” are two different things. When viewing footage at 8MP or above, simultaneous playback across multiple channels may be limited by the recorder’s decoding capability. For the smoothest performance, single-channel or dual-channel playback is recommended.

If you plan to install 8 8MP cameras at once, we recommend looking directly at the NVS16 series, as it offers more generous channel capacity and decoding headroom.

Alarm Interfaces: Connect Door Contacts, Flashing Lights and Sirens

The unit provides 8 Alarm In and 4 Alarm Out interfaces. Alarm In can be connected to door contacts, infrared beams and emergency buttons; Alarm Out can drive sirens and flashing lights or trigger third-party entrance lights.

This interface is the biggest difference between an NVR and a “box that only records”: it can serve as the brain of the entire security system rather than merely recording passively.

Before connecting the cables, please confirm the voltage and dry-contact specifications of the external devices. Incorrect wiring may damage the mainboard. If you are unsure, we recommend having the installation handled by a professional installer.

View Simultaneously on Mobile and Computer: One App to Manage All Cameras

Use the Reolink App (iOS/Android) on your phone and Reolink Client (Windows/macOS) on your computer. Log in with the same account to view all channels, with support for split-screen viewing and timeline playback.

In the App, you can rename each channel (for example, “Front Door” or “Back Alley”) and set notifications to be pushed only for selected channels, avoiding being woken up at night by a passing cat.

If there are elderly family members or domestic helpers at home, you can create sub-accounts with viewing-only permission, without allowing them to delete recordings or change settings. This permission structure is more important in actual use than you might expect.

When Should You Choose NVS8 Instead of NVS16?

8 channels means that you can connect up to 8 PoE cameras. If you are covering a single-storey village house, one street-level shop, or one parking space plus a corridor, 8 channels are usually sufficient. For properties with more than two floors, or detached houses requiring coverage of the front, back and both sides, you should consider a 16-channel model.

Another point to consider is whether you may expand the system in the future. Cabling costs are far higher than the price difference between recorders. If there is a possibility that you will expand from 6 cameras to 10, choosing a 16-channel model from the start is more cost-effective than replacing the recorder later.

For storage, this series is available in two versions: the bare unit and the version with a built-in 2TB hard drive. The hardware is identical; the only difference is whether a hard drive is pre-installed. If you already have a hard drive or want to choose the capacity yourself, get the bare unit. If you want to use it straight out of the box, get the 2TB version.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add a hard drive myself? What type should I buy?
This unit already includes a built-in 2TB hard drive. You can still add another drive via SATA/eSATA, up to a total capacity of 12TB (maximum 6TB per drive). We also recommend choosing a surveillance-grade hard drive.
How many cameras can an 8-channel model connect?
Up to 8 PoE network cameras. Each camera only needs one network cable for both power and data transmission. If you plan to connect more than 8 cameras, choose a 16-channel model instead; do not try to exceed the limit by forcing the connection through a Switch.
Which Reolink cameras are supported?
Supports Reolink network cameras up to 12MP (PoE models can be powered directly by the NVR). WiFi models can be added to and managed under the same account, but they will not receive power through the NVR.
How long can recordings be retained?
This depends on the hard drive capacity, number of cameras, resolution and recording mode. With 8 cameras recording continuously at 4MP, 2TB provides approximately one to two weeks of storage, while 6TB can provide more than a month. Using motion-triggered recording can significantly extend the retention period.
Is a monthly fee required?
No. This unit uses local storage, with recordings saved on its own hard drive, so there are no cloud subscription fees.
Could a power outage damage the unit or cause recording loss?
We recommend using the unit with a UPS. A sudden power outage while the hard drive is writing data may cause file corruption. If power outages occur frequently, adding a small UPS is the most practical protection.
Can I view the cameras remotely on my phone?
Yes. Log in to the Reolink App with the same account to view live footage and playback remotely. You can also create a sub-account for family members with viewing-only permissions.
Is this Hong Kong official stock? How long is the warranty?
Yes, this is Hong Kong official stock and comes with a local warranty certificate and a 2-year warranty. Non-Hong Kong official versions generally only include the seller's own warranty, and repairs must be sent back to the country of origin.
Are overseas parallel-import products worth buying because they are cheaper?
We do not recommend them. Overseas versions may differ from Hong Kong models in voltage, plug type, regional App services and warranty coverage, with no local support if problems arise. We only guarantee Hong Kong official stock; versions shipped from overseas warehouses (Australia, the UK, Germany, Singapore, Canada, the United States, Malaysia, France and Dubai) are not covered by our warranty.

Not sure whether 8 channels are enough?

Send us your floor plan or on-site photos. We can recommend a suitable model based on the number and locations of cameras, cable-routing distances and whether a UPS is needed, helping you avoid choosing the wrong number of channels.
