Product Overview

NVS8-8MD4 delivers the highest image quality in this series: 4 × 4K 8MP cameras, an 8-channel NVR (with built-in 2TB storage), and four 18-metre PoE cables. It is ideal for situations where you need to clearly identify faces, licence plates and product labels, such as shop entrances, warehouse access points and office corridors.

Official camera specifications: 4K 8MP @20fps, 2.0mm F2.0 lens (80° horizontal, 48° vertical), support for motion／person／vehicle／animal detection, PoE power, IP67 weatherproofing and two-way audio; the NVR provides 8 channels, 8 PoE ports (25W per port), built-in 2TB storage, support for up to 12TB, 4K HDMI output and 4-channel synchronous playback.

All four 4K cameras can record 24/7 simultaneously, but 2TB only provides approximately 5-8 days of storage (depending on scene complexity). If you need to retain footage for longer, set the recording mode to “motion-triggered＋5 seconds before the event” after unboxing, or install a larger hard drive directly.

The Real Value of 4K Image Quality

8MP is 3840×2160, offering approximately 60% more pixels than 5MP 2K+. The practical difference is not that it simply “looks sharper”, but that the footage remains usable when enlarged: letters on licence plates, facial features and package labels are often just indistinct patches of colour at 4MP, while 8MP gives you a chance to identify them.

The trade-off is file size. With the same 24/7 recording, 4K requires approximately twice the bitrate of 2K, so the number of days that can be stored on the same hard drive is halved. This is a fact you must accept when choosing the 8MD4, not a shortcoming.

The Practical Reality of PoE Installation

All four cameras are powered through the NVS8’s PoE ports. Each cable carries both network data and power, so there is no need to install a socket at every camera location. For shops that have already been fitted out, this can directly determine whether installation is feasible.

The manufacturer includes 4 × 18-metre PoE cables. For a typical Hong Kong shop (300-600 sq ft), they are generally long enough to run from the cabinet to the four corners. If you need to extend the cables, each individual run should ideally not exceed 80 metres; otherwise, PoE voltage drop may cause the cameras to restart repeatedly.

AI and Playback on the NVR

NVS8 supports person／vehicle／animal detection (detection is completed on the camera, while the NVR records event markers) and AI video search: search directly for clips where “someone appeared” without fast-forwarding through an entire night’s footage. For shop managers who need to review recordings once or twice a day, this is more useful in practice than any specification figure.

The playback interface supports 4-channel synchronous playback, allowing four camera angles to be displayed side by side for comparison. HDMI outputs 4K directly to a TV or monitor, with no additional computer required.

Hard Drive Planning and Future Expansion

NVS8 has 1 SATA＋1 eSATA slot, with built-in 2TB storage and support for up to 12TB. You can either replace the hard drive with a larger one or connect an external enclosure via eSATA for expansion, without replacing the entire NVR.

The hard drive is the only NVR component that experiences regular wear. We recommend checking the “actual recordable days” in the system every six months. If the number of days suddenly decreases, it usually means the hard drive is beginning to develop bad sectors and should be replaced as soon as possible.

User permissions and remote access

Up to 20 users (1 administrator + 19 sub-accounts), with different permissions for store managers, supervisors, and owners. Supports up to 12 simultaneous streams (10 sub-accounts + 2 main accounts), so multiple users can view at the same time without disconnecting one another.

Supports P2P, RTSP, RTMP, DDNS, FTP and other protocols. Remote viewing is available via the mobile App, PC client, and browser. RTSP allows connection to third-party systems, giving this PoE kit an advantage over Home Hub.
