Product Overview
The Reolink NVS12W is an NVR designed for wireless centralized recording. It features built-in dual-band Wi-Fi 6, allowing you to connect wireless cameras directly without running network cables to each camera, and it has no PoE ports. With a built-in 2TB hard drive, it is ready to record right out of the box.
Official specifications: Supports up to 12 IP cameras (up to 16 channels); dual-band wireless IEEE 802.11a/ac/ax/b/g/n at 2.4GHz/5GHz (WPA3); 1 SATA slot with a built-in 2TB HDD, expandable up to 16TB; HDMI supports 4K; 4-channel synchronous playback.
**Please note: This unit has no PoE ports**, so it cannot directly power PoE cameras. It is suitable for use with Wi-Fi cameras or battery-powered cameras (via wireless connection), or with a separate PoE switch. Dimensions: 255×49.5×222.7mm; weight: 1.4kg; DC 12V/2A.

Wi-Fi 6 Centralized Recording: Solving Storage Issues for Battery-Powered Cameras
The biggest challenge with battery-powered cameras is where to record footage. They usually rely solely on a microSD card; once the card is full, footage is overwritten, and if the card fails, the recordings are lost. The NVS12W allows multiple wireless cameras to centrally save clips to the NVR’s 2TB hard drive, which is its most practical advantage.
The official specifications indicate dual-band Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) with WPA3 support. Wi-Fi 6 offers better simultaneous multi-device connectivity than previous generations, providing practical benefits for workloads such as ten cameras uploading event clips at the same time.
- Dual-Band Wi-Fi 6 (2.4G/5G)
- Up to 12 Channels (up to 16 Channels)
- Supports WPA3 Encryption
No PoE Ports: This Must Be Made Clear First
The official specifications clearly state “Without PoE Ports”. It has only 4 RJ-45 ports for connecting IP cameras (10/100Mbps) and 1 LAN/WAN port, and it does not provide power.
Therefore: if you want to connect PoE cameras, you must prepare a separate PoE switch or injector; if you are connecting Wi-Fi or battery-powered cameras, this has no impact at all. Getting this step wrong means the entire system cannot be installed.
- No PoE Power Supply Ports
- 4 RJ-45 Ports for Connecting IP Cameras
- PoE Cameras Require a Separate Switch
Built-in 2TB and Up to 16TB
1 SATA slot, with a built-in 2TB HDD and support for up to 16TB. It is ready to record right out of the box, so there is no need to purchase a hard drive separately — this is a convenience compared with the NVS4/NVS8 (which do not include hard drives).
2TB is generally sufficient for 12 wireless cameras (mostly using event-triggered recording) for a period of time. If you want 24/7 continuous recording from multiple 4K cameras, upgrading to a larger hard drive later is recommended.
- Built-in 2TB HDD
- 1 SATA, up to 16TB
- Ready to Record Out of the Box
HDMI 4K and 4-Channel Synchronous Playback
HDMI supports 3840×2160, 1920×1080, and other resolutions, while VGA provides an additional output. Connect it to a TV to view live footage and playback without using a computer.
4-channel synchronous playback is suitable for investigating events across multiple cameras. For systems with multiple wireless cameras, having a unified timeline on one NVR is much faster than logging into each camera’s app individually to search through footage.
- HDMI 4K Output
- 4-Channel Synchronous Playback
- VGA (backup)
H.265 and Network Protocols
Supports H.265/H.264. Wireless transmission bandwidth is limited, and H.265's low bitrate allows more devices to upload simultaneously over the same Wi-Fi network. This is why wireless NVRs particularly need H.265.
Supports HTTPS、TCP/IP、DHCP、P2P、RTSP、RTMP、SMTP、SSL/TLS、DNS、DDNS、NTP、FTP; up to 20 users and 12 simultaneous streams (10 substreams + 2 mainstreams).
- H.265/H.264
- Supports RTSP/RTMP
- Up to 20 users
Suitable and Unsuitable Systems
Suitable: Users who already have multiple Reolink Wi-Fi or battery-powered cameras and want centralized storage with a unified timeline; or homes and shops where running network cables to each camera is not desirable.
Not suitable: Systems using only PoE cameras (no PoE ports); setups requiring more than 16 channels (choose NVS36/RLN36); or systems requiring continuous 24/7 recording from multiple 4K cameras (both the hard drive and wireless bandwidth may become strained).
- Ideal for centralized recording of Wi-Fi/battery-powered cameras
- Not suitable for pure PoE systems
- For more than 16 channels, choose NVS36

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the NVS12W connect to PoE cameras?
Yes, it can connect to them (with 4 RJ-45 ports for connecting IP cameras), but **it will not provide power**. PoE cameras require a separate PoE switch or injector. The official specifications clearly indicate that this unit has no PoE ports.
Does it include a hard drive?
Yes, it has a built-in 2TB HDD and is ready to record right out of the box. It supports up to 16TB.
What is the difference between 12 channels and 16 channels?
The official model name is 12-Channel, but the specification sheet lists "Up to 16 IP Cameras" under IP Video Input. For practical planning, use 12 channels as the baseline; for more channels, consider the NVS36/RLN36.
Does Wi-Fi 6 help with recording?
Yes. When multiple cameras upload event clips simultaneously, Wi-Fi 6 offers better scheduling and bandwidth efficiency than older generations, reducing the likelihood of dropped frames.
Can it connect to battery-powered cameras?
Yes, this is one of its primary uses — it stores clips from battery-powered cameras centrally on the hard drive, helping overcome the limited capacity and risk of card failure associated with microSD cards. Please confirm the supported models with us before placing your order.
Can HDMI output 4K?
Yes, it supports 3840×2160. VGA output is also available.
Can it be viewed remotely?
Yes, it supports P2P, mobile apps (iOS/Android), PC clients, and browsers.
How many channels can be played back simultaneously?
Up to 4 channels.
How long can 2TB record?
It depends on the number of cameras and the recording mode. With mostly event-triggered recording, it can last a long time; continuous 24/7 recording from 12 4K cameras will use up the storage quickly. For this type of use, upgrading to a larger hard drive is recommended.
Does it support RTSP?
Supports RTSP and RTMP, and can connect to third-party systems or software.
Want to know whether your existing camera can connect directly to NVS12W?
Send us your camera model (or a few photos of the camera body), and we’ll help confirm whether it can connect wirelessly or requires an additional PoE switch, as well as calculate the required hard drive capacity.
